Hello,

I am not sure if the lower unit takes a special oil since it is so old. It is a 1973 evinrude 135 hp outboard. Is there a certain type this lower unit needs different from todays standard oil in lower units?

thanks

Re: what type of oil for the lower unit

Use a good quality High Viscosity Marine Outboard Gear Oil. 70-90 or 80-90 weight.

OEM would be Hi-Vis

That motor is putting a lot of load and stress on the gears. The previous answer is correct, but if it were mine, I would spend the extra buck for Hi-Vis. You can actually feel the difference if you get it between your fingers.

I agree with F_R.

You may get some contrary feedback on the oil because of the earlier service manual recommendations, but the oil was changed to Hi-Vis subject to an OMC Service Bulletin (#1394) issued in December 1975.
