I have a 302 Ford Mercruiser Engine in a 1985 Sylvan boat. But I think the motor is from the early 70's. I was wondering what type and weight oil I should use.

the old stand by of
10w30 or
20w40 sounds good.
Dont let the "w" fool you into thinking its for winter. it means that the oil is 10 or 20 weight when its cool (cold) and then thickens when it gets hotter.

thank you, I am using the boat to pull tubes and wakeboarding so it will have a load on it most of the time. Would the thicker or thinner oil be better.
Interesting, Mercruiser didn't use the Ford engines after 1977. Sure you have a Ford there?
Either way, here is Mercruisers latest information on the type of oil you use. Trust me, any of them are as good as anything used in the mid 70's.

yes it is a ford motor. The previous owner of boat pulled out the 4 cyl. engine that was in boat originally and put in the 302 mercruiser with a merc 888 outdrive. And thanks for the link
