So I drained the oil out of my 1976 Omc Sterndrive today. I noticed the oil in the top part is like car oil and the bottom is white and thick. So is it like car oil up top and gear oil on the bottom? I tried finding it in the manual and could not find anything. THanks

i'm not sure about those stringer drives but it may be that the upper and lower halves do not share a common oil passage for gear lube - there are others here who know lots more about those drives

in any case, white and thick gear lube means you have a leaking seal

UH OH, I hope its not leaking seal somewhere. Maybe the previous owner used a different type of gear oil? I owned the boat for 2 months now and had it out a dozen times. The stern drive is dry and there is no forms of leaks anywhere. What I did noticed is that the drain plug gasket is rotted but still I see no leaks since I owned it.

Top compartment 80W90 Gear lube OR Type C

Lower compartment Type C ONLY

You can buy Type C at Canadian Tire

white = water in the oil - check for fishing line around propeller shaft seal - pressure test lower unit and repair as necessary, or at least change the lube very often and monitor closely

I actually just change my prop and I didnt see any fish lines. So how would I pressure test the lower unit?

Drain the oil, replace one of the plugs and attach a pressure tester in the other. Go up to about 10 to 15 psi and see if or how long it takes to leak down. Should hold for 10 minutes or more. Also just as important is a vacuum test.

So im guessing canadian tire would sell the pressure tester as well? So how many Type C oil bottle would I need to fill the stern drive? Any idea where I can get the lower unit drain plug gasket?

Use 90Wt. Oil is never supposed to be white or even close. You have a leak. Get it fixed before you use it anymore or pay a big price.

Well its more like a light brown colour with a shade of white so I guess thats water in the oil for sure.

I think I am going to start by pulling the lower part of the stern drive apart. Since there is no sign of leakage on the outside, its gotta be in the inside. What parts should I be looking at? What type of seals, gaskets etc?

When you pull the plugs it will have seals on all the screws.ANY boat repair place will have these. You have 3 compartments(I think) with oil.The upper and lower and the trim section.
Drain all the oil and pressure test it.You might have to take it to a dealer to get it tested. It could be as simple as a drain seal or prop shaft seal.
You might get lucky and find someone who will work on it.
Seasons almost over.I'd just refill and use it.Just keep an eye on it.Make sure it's changed for the winter.J

Use either OMC Hi-Vis lube or 90wt gear oil in the upper gearcase, and OMC Premium Blend or Type C ONLY in the lower. You could use the type c in the upper but it's not necesary, but if you use other than Type c or PB in the lower you will have shifting problems.

can keep it real simple by putting type C in all drive compartments. it even works fine in the tilt. Plus, Crappy Tire has plenty of it... not quite sure why...but they always have lots

Re: What type of Oil to use in OMC Stern Drive

Before I did a compression test I changed all the Drain plug seals. They were like old rubber and rotten. I went to a boat shop and bought some but they were the white plastic ones. Then I put 20 psi in the drive and it seems to hold for about 45sec to a min. I noticed that there was some water forming around the propeller (circled in red in picture one). I wiped it dry and then I pumped more air in it and it started to get moist again. So I am thinking I need a seal for that plate. I pulled the plate off and noticed that the seal where the shaft slides through looks kinda rotted. This might be the cause of the leak?? Where can I get these seals? What are the names or part numbers? Thanks guys!!

iboats helps those who help themselves bud....

we gave you a link to an online parts book - most would be thankful and quite eager to go browse the exploded views and see what parts are available and what they cost

a month ago several of us suggested you get a manual, instead you just ask for people to verify their answers over and over here...

laziness does not earn my respect....
