what typeof fluids does my Merc use.

1990 4.3 Mercruiser with power steering. I want to replace my power steering fluid and my trim fluid.
I want to ask the experts on what oil/fluids to use. I was told regular oil and such but wanted to ask people that know and done it before.
There is no other reason besides age why I want to replace it. Trim fluid will be just sucked out from the holding tank and then I will do it again in the fall to change out the entire fluid with new. I dont want to bleed the lines and such.

Howdy,

It's best if you use what your Merc Owners or service manual suggests.

If you don't have one you can download one fairly easily.


Now having said that, your PS system will work fine with either Merc Power Steering and Trim fluid. (or Dexron)

The trim pump will literally work with just about any light petroleum oil (Merc says Merc Power Steering and trim fluid, Dexron, or 10w30 oil)

I use Dexron in both my Power steering and trim pump.

It's red.........I know if I see red oil, I know it's either the PS system or the trim pump.
