What was forgotten to be reconnected - after motor removal and installing back?

Hi,

Last autumn I was repairing the transom of my Starcraft Islander 221V (1995), mercruiser alpha, for which the engine was temporarily removed and put back late autumn when I was not able to test on water. Everything was looking like fine and motor was starting.

Last weekend I tried to put the boat on water, and appeared that putting throttle into 'F' or 'B' does not shift gears (there was no usual clutch, lever's resistance - how it was before, and the lever moved too easily), and the engine just works idle (throttle is working). It is just not shifting and the rotating moment is not passed to the propeller.

The mechanic is not reachable right now for some reason. What could he forget to re-connect? Is it easy to fix by myself? What has to be checked first?
Before going to another mechanic and pay $$$, I'd like to verify that it is not a trivial problem.

Thanks in advance

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... It sounds like neither the throttle cable, nor the shift cable from the controller were hooked up to the carb, nor the shift switch plate,...

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 5, but I'm also a Mechanic,....

Late thanks for your response! In fact, the mechanic suddenly appeared and fixed the disconnected cable. But I will keep in mind your suggestion for future.
