What work should I have done by Mechanic? 1972 50 hp Johnson

AS you've probably previously read, my boat is a cold start, but moreover stalls out OFTEN while putting it from neutral to reverse or forward in water. Does fine on Ear-muffs.

So I spoke with a great priced local mechanic who does work away from a Marina. He said it likely needs a 'link-and-sync' adjustment or carb cleaned/ rebuilt.

Here is my question... I can either bring it in and tell him to do the carb job ($70 charge), or lync and sync ($140), OR have him first diagnose it for $50. What should I do? Is it smart to have him diagnose it, or should I save the $50 diagnosis and tell him to do the lync and sync and/ or carb rebuild?

Also, does a 1972 Johnson have 1 or 2 carbs?

Thanks all

He should really put the diag charge towards your repair. I have found it is NEVER a good idea to tell a mechanic "I think it needs a carb rebuild" or some such thing. It's better to say "it stalls going into gear" and let him figure out why. Then if his repair doesn't work, he's on the hook.
