My 84 Evinrude 8HP kicker is acting up. I may be in the market for a new one.

What brand would you buy in the 8 - 10 HP range?

Obviously, 4 stroke is desirable, but I'm a bit pressed for money right now. So far, it looks like new 2 stroke = $1500, new 4 stroke = $2000, give or take.

I love my baby merc 7.5HP. It's a bit of underpower on my 12Footer, but bullet proof.
The 4cyles are nice.I like (I tested one) the Yammaha, and it was a very practical design. I just wish I could afford it.
But I would have to stick <10HP on my hull,as opposed to 15HP 2cycle. I like the ability to outrun t-storms too much, and so I'm looking at the Suzi...With drool comming out the side of my mouth.

:p

You won't beat the price of a 2-stroke and you won't have to change engine oil & filter.
4-strokes are very quiet and don't stink but they weigh more. The weight factor on an 8 to 10 horse outfit wouldn't matter much I don't think. With more horsepower the weight really does matter if you have to lift and carry them much. My choice is easily 4-stroke. Which brand? Oh boy here we go..... :)
