What would you do with the money?

I bought a '74 sixteen foot Lund that has a Chrysler 90hp motor of the same year. I have only had it out three times and it seems to run fine. It does however take time to fire before and during a day's trip, w/ a brand new battery. It also smokes quite a bit, especially when idleing. I plan on putting $200-$300 into it as soon as possible. Not knowing the previous history or care, what would the most benneficial things be to replace? Are there things I shouldn't screw with? Who sells good affordable product? etc. Thanks so much!

I'd go to NAPA and buy carb rebuild kit(s), a fuel pump rebuild kit and a 10 ft length of fuel hose for starters. Ask to see their marine catalog. Shouldn't be more than $50. Do you have water coming out the back at idle? Was the engine used in fresh water only? It probably wouldn't hurt to drop the LU and change the impeller either way.

Re: What would you do with the money?

I have not noticed any water coming out at idle, it's sounds ok to. I'm almost positive it has only been in fresh water. I am looking at this as a project, w/ plenty of time to use. Just didn't know what would be worth the time and money. I plan to keep it for years to come. Any more ideas that would benefit longevity and performance?

Number one, get a repair manual.

Start with fresh gas.
Wouldn't hurt to clean any junk out of the gas tank.

I would decarb the motor to remove carbon buildup.
how to decarb

Then I would replace sparkplugs.
Next, switch to a full synthetic TCW3 oil, pick a brand.
Fuel pump kit.
Carb kit wouldn't be a bad idea, see how its running.
Change lower unit lube.
tune-up kit - points and condenser.

$150 should cover it.

I appreciate the explanation, I did get a Clymer manual, but it's easier w/ more info. Are there any particular spark plugs I need for this motor? Or just any you recommend? I'll take any and all ideas. Thanks again.
