What would you pay? 1997 Crownline 202 BR

Looking at buying this boat locally, Was just curious as to what you guys would pay for this?

Its a 1997 Crownline 202 Bowrider, boat is very very clean inside and out, had cd player and 4 speakers. The biggest thing about the boat is it has a built 385 stroker motor. Boat is very very fast, and keeps up with the majority of single motor bajas, liberators, etc. Boat also has thru hull exhaust!

Give me approximately what you would pay, not sure of the hours off the top of my head, guessing in the 3-500 range. I want to stress how clean and nice this boat is...

Any help is appreciated!!

385 stroker? Is that like a guitar that goes to 11?

In any event, it depends a lot on where you live. Around here, this time of year you would be lucky to get 7K for it. Wait til spring and its worth maybe $1000 - $1500 more

yea was a 383, got some bad gas and detonation and had to take it out to a 385

Check the NADA guide. That'll get you a rough ballpark.

I have been drag racing for 20+ years, and doing our own motors(sb chevys). I find it questionable that bad gas, and detonation, would cause someone to have to rebore, and new pistons to a motor. Detonation may cause piston damage, but it has to be alot, not just some bad gas. I would pass on this one, sounds like someone didnt know what they are or is doing. Theres alot more questions I would have to the bulider and operator of this motor.

383, 385, whatever it takes....

The engine work in my opinion makes it worth less than stock as some components may be overtaxed now. The tuning is not stock, sounds like it is finnicky also. In any event, it would not be worth more than a well maintained stock boat, again just my opinion.

NADA will give you a ball park, but condition with boats can make a huge difference in retail price. If this is a person to person deal and you say it's in excellent condition I wouldn't hesitate to pay anywhere between $7,500 and $9,500.....depends where you live. I could see a dealer asking 10k for that boat around here.

It is actually my buddies boat so i know the history, know the engine builder here locally, I know it is not a hack job at all and the boat was maintained like a top! He is very very meticulous about his toys. The floor is 100% solid! The motor is very strong and no problems at all, runs like a champ, starts on the first click every single time.

I would without a doubt give this boat easily a 9.5/10, the gel coat is in very very good condition as well!

Well, what does your buddy want for it? Prolly a $8500ish boat this time of year. Any bimini top? Cover? Stainless prop? Trailer have a spare? Good tires?

Seriously, appearance only helps to sell a boat faster/easier, doesn't up the price that much.
I won't get you a bigger check from the insurance company either.

A seriously neglected boat will be harder to sell, but there seems to be plenty of uninformed people that will pay top dollar for a crappy boat.

Most people will not care one bit if the boat is 18 mph faster than a stock model, or if it keeps up with other boats, except for people that want to show off or beat the crop out of their boats.

I think many people are looking for a way into boating and skip over appearance which to me = care & Maintenance.

I would pay extra for a clean/ well maintained boat that looks like the above example, but I'm equally turned off by the engine, I'd prefer a stock example with a 5.7 or 7.4L of that vintage.

As for the boat, did we all gloss over that it may have an Alpha 1 and a '385' in it? That combo doesn't work in the long run. If you are willing to accept the built motor as a benefit and not a potential liability, the fact the drive isn't meant for that much HP coupled with it's well above average condition and full history then the price is up to you. Id be willing to spend as much as $8,000 for it with the trailer given everything you mentioned and how old it is. Given how poorly I see most people take care of their stuff, cars, boats, snowmobiles, whatever, I am very willing to pay them for their good care and maintainance at resale time.
I don't count NADA as even remotly accurate around here and dealers are simply off the mark for their advertised prices on used.

Since you know the builder, talk to him and get some details. How long ago was the 383 put in followed by a re-bore and new pistons, and re-balance? The 1st thought that popped into my mind, was the builder went too high for compression ratio in a boat. That would be very common for someone that is use to building car engines.

Since it is your buddy, how did he drive it? Did he hammer the throttle allot or was always being careful on accel given the alpha drive?

Even though it is a buddy, have it checked out by a mechanic. If everything is as good as described, i'd go 6-7K.
