what would you spend?

How much would you pay for a 1977 Evinrude 175hp outboard?

I've been toying with the idea of upgrading my 125hp force, to this engine.
But I'm done. Seems like it is not a feasible option.

So I'm trying to sell it locally. But I'm having a hard time finding a value for the engine.

It's in excellent condition, so what would be a reasonable value for it?

Re: what would you spend?

my boat came with the 125. I was going to upgrade to the 175, but my boat isn't rated for it, and it sounds like trying to modify the boat to accept the 175 is a pain, and could be unsafe. So it's not worth it to me.
So yes, I'm trying to sell the 175. I don't know what it's worth though, because I got it as part of a package deal.

Sell both and get one that will fit your boat.

Makes no sense. Says suggested HIGH retail of $110! I see 8-40hp motors selling all the time on CL for as much as $800.

I did some looking around on line and found some rebuilt ones being sold from vendors for $3000 or more.

That is quite the gap between the two!

Re: what would you spend?

Yea, this whole thing is just frustrating.

The 125 is the stock engine. I just calculated max safe hp via the backyardboatbuilders pdf manual. It says that I can safely use 175.....

I don't want to sell both, because my luck, I won't find a decent one in my price range. So then I wouldn't have my 125, OR the option of the 175. My 125 runs good now, but I just want a little more. I can hit about 28mph on choppy waters, and probably 30-32 on calm. But that's wide open. I'd rather not have to run it balls out all the time.

Re: what would you spend?

I look at my local Craigslist and eBay daily looking for great deals on smaller motors so I do run across the ads for larger ones also. 175Hp doesn't seem to be a popular HP but from what I've seen I'd say someone could pick up a decent 1977 175HP motor for $600 to $1000. If yours is in excellent condition and you could prove any maintenance....dealer service etc....you may be able to hold out for a little more. But unless it has had some recent DEALER rebuilds I would guess you would have a hard time getting anything over $1000. Those $3000 motors must have had some major rebuilds and possibly come with a warranty. All this is just my opinion and I only gave it because YOU asked for it.:D

No, I wasn't figuring on $3000. I was thinking $1000 would be a good deal. If those smaller ones were running that high, then this should be a steal.

I don't have maintenance records, but I am building a maintenance stand for my 125, the 175 has one... Look at this thing. My dumb @$$ put the scratches in the lower end unloading it from my truck when I bought it. I didn't know how to do it the easy way.

I mentioned the stand because I'm going to rig the controls to the stand so I can make it run. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but the stand for this thing is a monster! I would easily trust to fire it over on the stand. Then I could show it runs. A quick video clip can prove compression test.

Re: what would you spend?

Being able to demonstrate it runs definetly adds to its value. If a seller says his motor runs but can't start it because he doesn't have a gas tank...doesn't have a water hook up...his dog attacks it if he starts it up:D etc etc etc...that tells me it doesn't run and I make my offer accordingly. Your motor does look nice, but I just don't think 175's are in great demand. May seem odd but the smaller motors are much more in demand (at least in my area) and can bring prices which seem way out of line if only comparing horsepower.

What size/kind of boat were you going to put it on? I'm guessing it doesn't have the rating plate on it?

Re: what would you spend?

i have been trying to sell a 200 Erude, for $650, no takers. used smaller motors sell for more than the big ones.

your motor looks good, but it is a 1977, it is 33 years old. do not expect more than $600 for it. you must be able to start it, and run it on the stand. even thought, it runs on the stand, does not mean it is a good motor.

in the last 2 months, 2 of my customers, have bought 225 hp engines. both sounded good out of the water, in the water, no power. both had blown cylinders.

to a buyer, not having a water test, is nothing more than a BIG GAMBLE. repairs will be in the $2,800 - 3,300 range for my customers, far more than they paid for the motor.

they learned there lesson, of pre-inspection, and water test.
