Surface gap plugs(L76V) do not have an adjustable gap. J-gap(normal) plugs (L77JC4) use a gap of .040 for that engine

Somewhere between 1979 & 1985. The serial number is the important info you need to get parts. The gap: Surface gap(L76V) or (L77JC4).040

Wow, that was fast. So how can I narrow it down for the year or it really doesn't matter between 79 and 85?

Doesn't really matter. The serial number identifies the differences on all the Mercury built products. As for narrowing it down... It isn't in the Mercury database... Sorry.

Your engine is 1979 and was made in Canada.
