What year did johnson change its control box

I have a 1993 Johnson 70hp that has a blown top cylinder. Found a 1988 90hp Johnson that I am buying. Wondering if my controls are gonna work, or if I need to put in the controls that are coming with the 90. I was told they switched wiring harnesses some where in there. Anyone know.

I recently replaced a 1988 70 with another of undetermined year, possible a blend after years of repairs, but I think the switch was in 86/87. So you might be alright but hard to tell,plus you don't know what's been changed around since it was new.

1996 is the new harness.

There are some minor changes in the controls between 1979 and 1995, but the main harness with the red plug, and the shift and throttle cables remain the same.

I just went through this myself and I found out 1995 was the last year for the old style control boxes. Good luck.
