Which particular motor are you inquiring about? Mostl old motors except some back in the 'teens, '20's and early '30's had magneto powered point and coil ignitions. Some of those very old motors needed a dry cell battery for the ignition system.

sorry, i have a a few here, 2 tn-26's, and a qd 10, that have the older style....obsolete coils, just wondering what year....in the early 50's that they changed to the universal coils that can be found easily?

Not all model of motors changed in the same year.

It is my understanding that the TN-26 has the rotating center magnet magneto. TN-27 is the oddball with the highly obsolete 550040 coils and the same points and condensers as the TN-26. TN-28 has the Universal Magneto.

QD-10 and QD-11 have that same highly obsolete magneto with the 550040 coils as the TN-27. QD-12-up should have the Universal magneto.

Should be a disclaimer in here somewhere to the effect that I could be mistaken. But this information and $2 will get you a cup of coffee in all but the fancy joints.

Ok, now I understand what you are asking. What is called the "universal magneto" is the one takes the popular #580148 points and the #580321 capacitor as compared to the old style "push-rod" points.

There are 3 magnetos under discussion here. 1st has the rotating magnet in the center, the one nwcove is referring to as "obsolete".

Following that one was the one I was talking about that takes the 550040 coils and push rod points. Those 550040 coils are even more obsolete than the ones in the center magnet mag. This one was only made for a couple of years and the coils all melted.

Finally, came the OMC Universal Magneto that was used forever and we are all familiar with.

Here are pictures of the 3 systems: The Universal Magneto is shown with the coil locating tool.

Are you sure you need a coil? Those coils are respected as being nearly bulletproof. There are lots of used ones around if you really need one. They are still around because they rarely go bad. If you need one, try a free want ad on the classified ads pages at the Antique Outboard Club's website, www.aomci.org

Coil locating tool? I just love it when F_R teases us with some of the secret stuff!

The coil locating ring has been a regular factory tool and mentioned in the service manuals for approximately 50 years, maybe 1/2 of a century. I doubt it would be called "secret".
