On this project I am trying to identify if the Yamaha block they sold to Mariner would work on a Yamaha 30 motor. It would have to be a 2 Cycl. Yamaha made 2 Cycl for Mariner after they went to 3 for themselves. When did Yamaha Change? Thanks
Mercury started making the powerheads for Mariner in 1995. Every block that Iv ever seen made by Yamaha for Mariner WOULD NOT interchange. Specific to the Mariner.
Just to make sure....E-Mail TheCaptKen@aol.com

He is a Yammie dealer and also a pilot. And is full of it also! He might know a few things I dont...Cause I dont know squatt!
I believe 1997 was the last year for Yamaha's 2-cylinder 30 hp.

They still make the 25 hp 2-cylinder (395 cc). It may be the same one you're looking for ?
I think I misunderstood your question Ron.

As far as I know, Yamaha built the 2-cylinder 30 hp up to 1987 when they dropped it and introduced the 3-cylinder 30 hp. So 1986 would've been the last year to get a 30 hp 2-cylinder. Then in 1991 Yamaha made both a 2-cylinder and a 3-cylinder 30 hp (they re-introduced a 2-cylinder). Then in 1998 they again dropped the 2-cylinder and only have the 3-cylinder of today.

The 30 has a weird history with Yamaha, but I think all the switching is a result of the hp range it is in....kind of at the 2-cylinder or 3-cylinder turning point for outboards and marketing. Also it was all about oil injection/pre-mix and the "C" series. I think all the 2-cylinder 30's were C's.

I think Yamaha finally figured it out though. Now they offer only the 3-cylinder, 30 hp, 496 cc (with oil injection) and the same 496 cc 3-cylinder in a 25 hp (with pre-mix). They also offer a 395 cc 2-cylinder 25 hp with pre-mix. Their bases are pretty much covered now.

Hope this helps your project.
Forktale: I appreciate the info. I saw a picture of a powerhead on ebay of a motor with the exact same block but the guy only had the powerhead left. It had this stamped in the block: 2 68901. I think it was a mid 80s and the model was 30ELO689L and sn 418256. Besides the info you gave me thats all I know. Oh yeah this I was told was a Mariner. Perhaps Yamaha and Mariner both used the same block for a while. Do you know the displacement of this thing? Maybe one day I'll find a blown motor and make me and the other guy both happy.
fone_man posted a real good model and serial # breakdown a few days ago and from that it appears the Mariner Motor on e-bay is a 1987, so I can add that to our detective work. Too bad that guy had already gotten rid of the rest of the motor. Thanks again
