If the serial number and horsepower is specified, Mike is correct I use the Mercury charts on maxrules.com.
In this case, I used the mercurypartsexpress.com website to confirm serial number and model number, and to check the validity of the 80hp claim. That serial number brings up parts lists that would be suitable for 70 through 90hp, 3 cylinder models. Knowing it is an 80hp 3 cylinder, allows me to cross reference the specific year using the maxrules.com site.
bhile, you need to remember that the serial number groupings cross over a variety of horsepowers. Best way to determine the year without digging for jet sizes, , casting numbers etc is to get -both- the horsepower and serial number specified before guessing at a year.
