Re: What year is my motor?
JB's correct, that's a Gale number.
GG9003A is a 1957 5hp engine, which was based on the 5hp TD/TN series Johnsons from the very early 50s & late 40s.
It is water cooled. The 'Impeller' is hiding behind the propeller, under the first cover. This is not an impeller like on a modern engine, and don't wear out as bad as modern ones. So if it's still cooling the outboard fine, you can leave it alone. The downside is that they're very sensitive to sand.
I've got some leads on replacement impellers though, if you need one.
A few more peices of info:
Spark plugs: Champion J6C gapped at .030".
Fuel/Oil mix: 24:1 (use 87 octane gas and TC-W3 rated outboard oil)
Lower unit lube: I believe these are lubricated with Lubriplate #105 grease.

Hope this helps!
