I just picked up a Johnson 18, Seahorse. Price of free was too hard to pass up! When I get it running it will be a good kicker to back up the Johnson 55.

Model: 0D-18, I think.
Serial: 499220

The numbers were stamped at an angle.

Thanks!

Welcome to Iboats, Fish_Nut!

I think that's a QD-18 you've got there, which is a 1957 10hp. A FD-18 would be would be a 1964 18hp. The '57 should have an all metal lid, and the '64 should be half-fiberglass. Which do you figure?

The lid is fiberglass. It has the fast/slow speed adjustment and the choke under the pull start.

Thanks for the 'Welcome' and quick reply.

No trouble at all! That sounds like '64 would be accurate then.
Here's a picture of the '64. The colours are a little off (the grey is closer to white) but does the cover, etc, look the same?
1964 18hp

The cover looks like the bottom motor, with a hole in the lid for the choke and speed.

Maybe a FD-16? The early 60's cowls had controls on them rather than that hatch. Like this one here:

'61
Which letters or numbers are you unsure about in the model number?

It's also a possibility that the hood has been switched too.

I'm unsure about the 0D-18 or QD-18. It definitely does not look like an F. I'll take some pictures and post them to my website. It make take a day or two.

Thanks!

If that cowl belongs to the rest of it (and I think that it does), it's definitely a 1960 18hp FD-14.
That cowl style was only used in '59 and '60, and the cowl decals match the '60. Also, that appears to be a 'Warm White' paint job on the engine which was also only used on the 18hp in '59 and '60.

I can't imagine what happend with the model number stamp. Must have been a Friday afternoon job!

Thanks for all of your help. Now I'll dig into it and unfreeze it. After I get it running, I need to figure out how to mount it on a 2 1/2" transom.

Talk to you again.
