Hi everyone new to the site, and I hope someone can help!!
Bought this motor while back and now I need to buy parts but there is no model number to be found. It had vro so its newer than 84. I have a 120 that is similar except the TNT is completely different. I'm not sure if its a looper or cross flow. If someone knows of anyway we can pin this down I would greatly appreciate it!!!

The gears and cases were the same year after year !----Somebody painted this thing and graphics are not original.---Can not tell the year now.----Take the cowling off and look for a disc with numbers.

I had a feeling it was painted and stuff since I have not been able to find one like it. Some of the saltwater series motors are white with blue letters, but they are stickers. This motor has raised plastic emblems that break in half.
I will look for the discs. I have looked before but didn't notice one. Can you tell me what part of the motor has the disc head, block, .manifold???

No reverse means you may just need to make adjustments.-------First thing to check is the shift rod height.-----Take the lower unit of.---Put it in neutral.----Post the dimension from the top gearcase surface to the center of the pin hole.

I haven't taken it apart yet didn't want to disable my boat. On the muffs it seems totally fine goes into gear right away and then there is extra travel in the shifter after it is in gear so I would think it is fully in gear. But when its in the water you can put it in gear but if you try to give it gas it starts grinding. When I tear it down I will check that measurement.
Ok my motor is newer than a 84 because that's when they started the vro. After scouring through schematics I have found that after 90 they changed to a 4 bolt trim motor. I have the 3 bolt so I have got it narrowed down to a 84 to 90 25 in looper 140.
Anyone think of any other yr specific parts on these motors?

Looking in the the brochures from 1985(first year for the looper) til it was replaced/relabeled as a 130, I could not find any 140 that had a wedge shape(anode?)[red arrow] in front of the lower engine mounts. It was common on some of the off shoreV6s, but not on V4s. I will go back and look at the commercial models How long have you had this engine? It looks like am extra long shaft (25")

Thanks Jimbo for the info... let me know what you discover. I bought it 2 yrs ago and have had it going over a yr. I think it is a 25 in looks just like my 120 that I know is a 25 in. It looks long in the pic because I have it backed up on a hill so its easier to get in the back.

What would be the difference in a commercial model? Is it better usually?

" commercial " is a bit of marketing 101-------Well that model would use a V6 lower unit.----The rest is identical to a regular motor !!

Don't know a lot about these motor but does that mean I would have a 15 spline shaft?

All the splines on V-4 / V6 are the same from 1973 to at least 2000 I think.

Ok I thought maybe that would be how we could figure it out with the splines. You guys mention the gear ratio is different on the commercial model. This motor will only push my boat 28 mph its a 21 foot wacc. The 120 I had on my 21 center console would run 46 mph. That seems like a huge difference. I know the new boat is heavier but I didn't think it would be such a big difference.

Were you talking propshaft splines or driveshaft splines ?----It helps you to be specific.

Prop shaft.
Found a website that shows a whole list of model numbers from evinrude. You can look at a list of all there commercial, military, racing and rec models. The list for commercial motors does not show them making one in 140.
Jimmbo the anode you pointed out is odd. I have looked at hundreds of pics of old evs and I have yet to see one with that anode. Could it be aftermarket??? Now that I have a complete list of model numbers from those years I am going to start scouring the parts diagrams looking for that anode. Shoud be able to pin it down more. Theres not that many models once you figure out the ones for 25 in.

That anode is used on the offshore V6 models. Maybe it was used on 25in. V4 motors, Or you could have a motor that has been cobbled together from a bunch of parts

I would guess an 1988 or 89, but it is just a guess
