What year is this 6hp Johnson? Good motor?

Curious what the year might be on this 6hp Johnson?
Are the smaller Johnsons as reliable as the 25hp+ outboards?

Anybody have experience with this motor?

I'm looking for an outboard for a 12' aluminum boat and this is what I think I want to get. Would a small Merc be about the same for reliablility? That would be my second choice.

I want one - but hey, if it checks out and runs good - not sure it will fetch $500, but maybe if he can show you receipts for all the new parts. Depends on year too - ask the guy for the model and or serial #, and there's people on here who are like Rainman and can tell you the year etc etc.

Its from the eary 1970's. I'd guess 1970. Its a great motor, but way overpriced at $500 US. Those 6 hp motors go for about $370-400 CDN where I live.

I'm with you on the price issue, I'd probably offer 300 and end up paying 350 if I had my way. I've seen them for less but this one "runs great" according to the seller. I do want a motor that "rund great" but am also aware that people are jsut trying to get some $$$ out of old motors and will type anything into craigslist to do so.

I have a 12 footer and two O/B motors that I can use on it....6 HP and 8HP Evinrudes.
There is a surprising difference in performance....I would think about an 8HP if you can swing it.

I had one of those and they run great, easy to maintain and on a light boat, with a light load, you'll be surprised. I'd at least do a compression check as those motors can run well with low compression, but will lack power.

My 12 footer is rated for a 7.5 so I better not run the 8 just to be on the safe side...just kidding. I'd like to run a 9.9 so I can get back in quickly in the rain but you're right the 8 would be perfect.

How fast to you get going and how does she plane out with the 8 WOT?

Sounds good, that is what I've heard about the Johnsons. Forgive me for my ignorance...how does one check the compression? Do you take it to a small engine repair shop or do it on your own?
