I think i just had a major prob with my 90 evinrude 25HP engine. After testing it on my boat the engine shuts off, and steam is comming out of the exhaust (and my ears). It fires right back up and water is comming out of the pisshole but it is hotter then hell. The engine backfires a little right when you start it up but not going at WOT, did i burn this thing up, it is still tight to pull it over so i dont think i lost any compression or do i just need a new water pump, Any help would be greeeeat. Oh by the way i am buying a 15' gregor for this new engine because it is toooo much for my itsy bitsy 13' valco.<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />Mike

Hope ya did'nt hurt it!.. <br /><br />I'd do a compression test just to be sure there's no internal damage... <br /><br /> Might want to have a look at the thermostat as they sometimes "stick" from corrosion, and definately replace the impeller/water pump..

I am gonna take it into my local boat shop on monday. I dont think any damage was done, the head gasket isnt blown, but for sure i am gonna have em look at the engine at the shop.<br />In all honesty do you really think there could have been hard core damage to the engine, it has a rev limiter and an emergancy shutoff so if it gets hot is turns off.<br /><br />Mike

It sounds like it was shutting down like it was supposed to, so you probably didn't do any major damage. Sounds like a 1] stuck thermostat or 2]impeller to me, too.
