I obtained a : 4429 - 00307 : 4 cilinder evenrude motor. I would like to know how old this motor is, what the horse power is and its approximit value? I was told that it had some value?

Are you sure that is the right number? Because according to that number it is a 1949 model 5.4 HP motor and that does not sound right since you said that it was a 4 cylinder

According to the number you indeed have a 1949 Evinrude Zepher. These were four cylender 2-stroke motors. They are kind of interesting, but not that uncomman. As far as value is conserned, its anybodies guess. My guess would be less than $100.

Re: what year is this evinrude?

I have owened a couple of these motors in the past. As I recall they were kind of a pain. I believe I was able to make them both run. I never did actually use one. Nathan I have a fairly extencive library of most things mechanical.<br /> Wellcraft, I really don't know how easy the parts are to come by. I am sure they can be had somewhere. Why do you think your motor needs a mechanical overhaul? I don't think these things ran long enough or good enough to wear out. I did see some parts on Ebay. Now that I think about it I don't believe I have a parts catolog for this model. I'll look.

Re: what year is this evinrude?

Hi Wellcraft, you'll have to refresh my memory. As I recall this motor uses only two coils and two point sets. Two plugs fire at the same time. One on the compression stroke and the other on exhaust. Also I think the point sets have a bakealite stick that follows the cam on the crankshaft and actuates the points. Simular to the TD series. This little stick gets gummed up. Did you remove it and clean it? I'm going strickly from memory here, and it's been a while. Playing with old motors is fun and as you note fifty bucks can keep you pacified for a while. It would be neat to go for a ride with a zepher. Maybe if you clean up the other two motors and find some numbers on them. I might be able to identify them for you. There is an Antique outboard club and they have a web site. They may be able to help you get your zepher running.
