Hello i am new hear but you guys have got these things figured out i was impressed reading thru some of the forums my ? is i have an old evinrude 6hp fisherman serial # 6302sj 03023 need to get some parts for but dont know what year it is any help will be greatly appreciated thanks

Hello to all in the iboat forum. I am new here and have been looking around for a few weeks now. <br />I am looking for as much information as possible on what i believe to be a 6hp evinrude fisherman. <br /><br />The only numbers I could find are 278619, is this motor a 6hp from 1978, what is the correct way to read the numbers for future info buying parts if needed. 2 is that for 2 cycle or stroke , 78 the year, 6 hp, and what is the 19 for? <br /><br />Second question is will i have a hard time finding replacement parts for this year motor? I know nothing about them and this is my first one so any help would be greatly appreciated thanks all and what a wonderful forum thanks of rhaving it. Rob

Welcome Chieftanbear!<br /><br />That sounds like a part number or casting number, not a model number. You're reading way too much into it anyway, the model numbers were just this side of random. They do make sense on some plane, but not the one occupied by most sane people.<br /><br />The normal places to find a model number are on the nameplate or the welsh plug. The nameplate is normally riveted to the port transom clamp. The welsh plug is an alternative - it's a silver, convex disc about the size of a quarter pressed into the engine block. It'll have some numbers on it.<br /><br />If you haven't got either, post a picture. Best to do one with the cowl on and a couple with the cowl off - port and starboard.

Hello and thanks for clearing that up for me. I was having a bit a trouble getting the info and that number is right where you said I got it from right on the bottom right side of under the motor. I guess since I don't recall seeing anything of silver color with numbers on it I will get the picture posted asap. I am new to motors of this sort and just want to make sure I running the motor in specs and properly. Thanks
