I was told this motor is a 1958. Elgin 12 serial #962 2395, 12 BHP @ 4,000 RPM, model 571 58962 Sears Robuck and Co. It also has 73708 cast onto it. Can anyone verify that? Also should I run grease -or- 90 weight oil in the lower end? It had oil... well kind of. I have torn it apart and the bearings are bad but the gears look fine. Also can I silicon the unit back together or should I try to make/find gaskets. The money's not the issue it's that I can't seem to find any one who sells any parts.

571 indicates your motor was built by West Bend.
It should be the same as a model 1280
You might try Laings Outboards for parts.
www.laingsoutboards.com and maybe Twin Cities outboards www.tcoutboard.com.The Antique Outboard
Club at www.omci.org.Use standard outboard gear oil.You may be able to find Bearings and seals at an Industrial supply house where they sell
bearings, seals and such. youll need to bring the old stuff for sizes.I would try to make new gaskets.

Re: what year was my motor made

thanks for the reply. I have the bearings, bushings and seals dealt with... my brother in law works for motion industries... they distribute basically all the bearings, seals belts you name it for the west coast. They also own Napa so those kind of parts are no problem and I can get them at cost. If anyone needs current bearing numbers or seal numbers for this type motor let me know and I'll post them. The gears have coggs that are special so I'll run the old ones as they look OK now that they are re-bushed. I'd love to get a second set for the future though.
