What year? Where can I download a free manual?

Hello, can anyone help - I am wanting to know:

a) What year is my Johnson 4.5 hp - model no J5RC1C (1 could be an I), serial no A678333.
b) I want to change the impeller on the motor, its been sitting in the shed for 10 yrs, starts fine. Where can I find/download a free manual? The sticker on the side says Australian made, if that is any help.

The "CI" in your model number indicates that your engine is a 1981 model.

A free manual... no such animal to my knowledge.

Check the info/hyperlinks at the top of this page. You'll be able to navigate to to the parts manual to pinpoint the part number of the impeller and anything else you might need.

Frankly no big deal to drop the gearcase off . Very similar to my 6hp and I dont have a manual for that

The shift rod pulls out from the mechanism at the top, the water tube pulls out from the top of the water pump and with luck the drive shaft pulls out of its splines in the crankshaft.

Pulling the driveshaft free from the crankshaft is likely to be the most difficult part if they have rusted together.

While its apart check that the water flow is not obstructed by the grommet at the top of the water tube. It probably will be! Corrosion around it compresses it over the top of the tube .... PITA !
Remedy is to also remove the powerhead from the leg. Remove the inner exhaust tube and renew the grommet.

A bit more fiddling about but all fairly straight forward.


You will find a manual of sorts at Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years! but it covers all models 1hp to 60 hp 1971 to 1989.

The parts lists and diagrams are very useful ... I did not even have access to those the first time I did my 6 hp waterpump.

Actually of an 8HP but all pretty similar. They show the problem with that grommet. Water ways in the head also needed unblocking which is why the head was also off

You could also go to shop.evinrude.com and look up your motor. They have good parts break downs.

I managed to get a manual that covered my motor(1962 28hp johnson) at the local library here in Brisbane
