I'm not sure which holes you're talking about, but there is no 'tell tale' like on modern engines.
Water should gush from the large hole on the propeller side of the engine, half-way up the mid-section, after the engine warms up and the thermostat opens.
If you can hold your fingers on the top of the engine block for three seconds, you're probably not overheating.

Do you mean the water is coming out from just below the engine itself, or under the hood?

I hope this helps!

just down and across from that large hole, some water does come out from the large one but just spits and sputters, can you tell me if there is a tube that the water exits, maybe something is bad inside, yes this did help thanks again

Re: What Yeart

So these holes are in the mid-section, not the lower unit? You had the water up to the seam between the lower unit and the midsection right? The water pump must be submerged to work properly at idle. The water pump is located at the seam between the lower unit and the mid-section.
All water is supposed to exit from the hole at the back of the engine. After the thermostat opens.

Keep an eye on the powerhead while you test it. You should be able to hold your hand on it for a couple seconds. It should be hot though.
I suspect what you're looking at is just some spurts from the water pump. I hope so anyway. If you're having an overheating problem, perhaps the powerhead base gasket is leaking, or there's a leak in the water tube.
An excellent way to test for good water flow is to remove the thermostat from the cylinder head, leave the thermostat cover off, and start the engine. Water should gush vigorously out through the hole that the thermostat goes in.

Good luck!
