Should the idle mixture screw be always at 1-1/4 turns, or should this be adjusted plus or minus with the idle rpm screw to attain the correct idle rpm speed? Thanks.

Best way to adjust it is to run up to operating temp and set the idle speed to spec. 1.5 to 2 turns rich is a good starting point. You then adjust the screw(s) lean a 1/4 turn or so at a time until you hear the rpms slightly drop. Then turn them rich until it smooths back out (1/8 or so). Keep going back and forth until you find the best running spot. Then reset your idle speed.

The proper way is with a vacuuum guage and a tachometer. And, if you really want to get geeky, do it tied up at the dock, in gear.

kagee's way is better cause the vacum gauges allow the needles to be set exactly the same. even though an expierenced guy might be able to set them by ear, the novice will have far better luck with the gauges. and they will be dead on!!

I need to do this tonight and i can't learn the vacuum style in time. But just for this purpose and this time alone, bjcsc member said that to first adjust the idle screw. Then the rpm screw. Not to be done in sync. Is this correct?

run the mixture screws out to 2 turns or so. adjust the idle screw so its idle is in the correct range. turn one mixture screw in till the engine changes. screw the same screw back out an 1/8 turn or so. do the same with the other needle screw. find where its a smooth idle. adjust the idle screw to the correct idle.

What's that thing Don always says? Not enough time to do it right the first time, but always enough time to do it over....

Understood. I just need to do this tonight so I can proceed to timing. I will not perfect all these things on the first attempt. I have to go back anyway several times until I get it right. Lots of practice. Next time will be with the gauge.

Where's the best place to tap into the carb's vacuum?

Anywhere there is a line coming from it. Usually at the base.
