I am replacing my steering cable on my '96 Larson 174SEI 3.0 Volvo/Penta I/O. When I removed the cotter pin at the cable/tiller connection and pulled up on the 1/4 inch pin - it had an upper and lower bushing also. The lower bushing dropped into a hole that looks to be behind the transom. Is is ok to leave it there? What do I do now? I don't think it fell into the flywheel area - but to tell you the truth - I don't know. I don't want to grind up any parts that don't need grinding if you know what I mean.

Thanks Again for any and all Help!

Re: What's down there?

I'm betting, if it is a steering bushing, that it is nylon, so a magnet might not work.

In my car, I usually don't worry about it, but on my boat, I don't care how small the part is, I'm digging around for hours if need be to recover whatever I lost. 2 Reasons... I need to know what it was (for sure), and more importantly, I do not want to run the risk of ANYTHING getting in the way of or blocking the flow / intake of my bilge pump.

Happy hunting!

Re: What's down there?

The bushing is Stainless & after looking closer I'm thinking the lower half of the bushing dropped into a opening that is just to the right(as you're looking at the transom) of a 1" water hose that goes thru the transom. My guess is that is is between the inner & outer mounting plates. Do you think I would have any luck with a magnet. I ordered the part from the dealer Saturday. I don't know how far to try to go to retrive the bushing - what's the likelihood it has gotten to a place that will cause a problem. Thanks for all help.

Post a picture texsun, that would show everybody exactly where it went and what risk you may have.
