Whats going on with my Johnson??

I just picked up a princecraft super pro 176 and it as a 1897 v4 110 johnson on it. I wanted to do a compression test on it which went well! Iput the motor in a big tote filled with water so it wouldnt be so loud in the neighbour hood. When i did this one side of the engine got way hotter then the other. The port side was at 120 while starboard hit 185. I shut it right down when i noticed that. BUT when i run it on the garden hose with the ears, both sides dont got over 130?? what could be the problem if any? im hoping to get it into the water this weekend and do a temp check at the dock before heading out

When running on a hose it is possiable for the water pressure from the hose to cover up a defective water pump. When was the last time the water pump was serviced.

hmm not really sure. Never asked the seller. I just picked it up monday. Probably wouldnt hurt to change it out anyways for peace of mind. so u think that could be the causing issue?

Every "New to me" motor needs a water pump impeller. Even if you see a good pee stream you dont know if the impellor is old and cracked and ready to fall apart and you dont want to find that out the hard way. Running a motor like yours in a small barrel or tub isnt a good idea, the exhaust exits at the prop and will aerate the water which can affect the ability of the water pump.

You also have two thermostats on your engine, maybe one of them is sticking, something to think about.
I would service the water pump and see if it helps your problem.

Thanks guys for the quick replys! i will pick up a new water pump tomorrow and get that changed and run it in the lake see if it fixes my problem. If not ill be back! Thanks again

If the water pump and the thermos don't do it, you could have some bad water deflectors in the cyl block.

Ill try the water pump first. I hear the thermos can be a pita to change?
