Completed tear down for rebuild today, and after I removed the exhaust cover (bewteen heads), the baffle/ deflector (whatever it's called) was broken in half (thus the shavings / cylinder damage).

I have not been able to find the part picture (to order a new one) so I was looking for help to identify what it's called (just out side the exhaust port, bolts to block with 3 bolts). There is one for each side, but strbd side is ok).

Any help greatly appreciated.

Got it, still not sure if they have to be re installed (based on some posts).

Anyone had experience not using filler blocks (and had no problems?)

Re: Whats it called????

If the inserts were melted / burned / broken we'll assume the motor was being lugged. If that doesn't change the new ones will end up in the same shape over time.

It will run just fine without them, we accidentaly found that out. When we started racing those motors we did a lot of work on the intake and exhast with stock porting (class rules). At higher rpm's leaving them out helps. It shouldn't -- on paper they should help by being there, kinda like headers.

Set up at low rpm (low 5000 range), leaving them out can't hurt and may help.

The new inserts are expensive. And rather expensive to machine. You bolt them in and then have them cut to match or be slightly below the exhaust plate gasket surface. Needs to be done in a mill.

One was broken...
I'm rebuilding the whole thing, but what exactly do you mean by "bing lugged"?

What is the top rpm the motor can achieve with a normal load?

The filler block kit is 392000, and is probably over $160.
