SUp I have an aluminum boat, there is a rotted old piece of plywood bolted on the back of the boat that the outboard moter is mounted on... does that part have a proper name... like a motor mount...? Thanks

Not the transom. The external plywood piece is called a motor pad by most of us here. A cosmetic chunk to minimize scratching when mounting the motor.

Aluminum John boats sometimes have plywood bolted inside the hull as well, at least the old ones. This would be considered part of the transom.

Re: Whats it called?

Regardless whatever you chose to call it , its an integral part of the transom and in its current condition the end result is the same - the transom is toast and must be repaired before the boat is safe to use. I told that to my FIL a few years ago and he chose to ignore my advise - the end result of that was that the "moter" fell off.....in the Lake......pulling the grandaughter..

Actually, its a real easy and cheep fix.

Re: Whats it called?

Just do not replace it with pressure treated wood! The new PT eats aluminum.

Re: Whats it called?

Thanks for the added comments.! Good I wanted to replace it just based on the looks but was not sure if i should risk taking it off, it looks like those drawings we studied way back in sex ed classes of a female's junk. ... I am avoiding heavy materials at all cost...there are other elements I am adding to the boat that take up a lot of the weight restrictions, eg. reserve battery for the adio, larger gas tank, beer cooler, marine vinyl apulstered swivel recliner... so what materials could I use that are lighter than wood yet still strong enough to hold the motor up... I am thinking about melting down aluminum into a thick piece and bolting it to the hull.....thanks again for youalls input..I've learned A LOT from these forums....

Re: Whats it called?

Just use a chunk of marine grade plywood.seal it up and put er on,done....I'd think it would be lighter than melted alum.
