i have a 1989 johnson 40hp w power tilt that hasnt been running right lately, it just fires and mab runs for 5 sec if your lucky.. so we finally went and had a compression test done... both cylinders were showing around 105 lbs. they did a leakdown test and they both werent holding pressure very well at all.. they told us they wanted $1800 to rebuild it! lol.... local marina.. were wanting to get a 25 hp anyway and get rid of this 40hp.....

My question is... i'm gonna try and sell it but not really sure what to ask or try to get out of it? $300?? need some help here

Spray some seafoam in the cylinders, let soak a while and mix some seafoam with your usual fuel in a small fuel tank, run it and test again, could very well be carboned rings.

i think you need a mechanic that does not sell motors and parts. it sounds to me that you either have a spark or carb problem. if the compression was with in 10% of each other, that motor should run. not running i would probably pay $200. but by doing a little work myself, it could be worth $900. just having trim n tilt, increase the value, $200-300. but not running, kills all that value.

yep turns out the ignition switch shorted out and burnt up an electrical module on the right side of the motor.... the mechanics at the dealership didnt know what they were talking about... took it somewhere else and got a real answer
