I'm getting married this September  My fiancee was not a happy camper when i bought this boat being so close to the wedding, I thought it was a good deal and couldn't pass it up. Im trying to prove to her that its worth more than i paid + put into it, she don't believe me. And i could be wrong but it would settle our little ongoing debate. Any and all input would be helpful thanks!

1990 Cheetah 1700LS, 3.0 Mercruiser, Alpha 1 drive, 1990 EZ loader trailer.

I bought this boat 2 months ago for $1,100. I replaced the bellows, gimble bearing, shift cable, trim pump motor, prop, changed all fluids and gave it a tune up. I did the work myself so i put between $400 & $500 into the boat. Everything works and it runs great.

Nice looking boat, and if it runs really well, if you sell it good luck finding a deal like that again.

Ironically, it's value will rise dramatically as soon as she shuts up about it, because peace and happiness are priceless.

i think you did well for $1600. though keep in mind that there will always be associated costs and time with owning and maintainining a boat. (just prepping you for the future discussions with the wife).

Re: Whats it worth?

Great looking boat. Seems to have been taken care of pretty well.

As far as the fiance goes, well, big fancy expensive wedding that lasts one day and people soon forget, pictures that someone might look at 15 years down the road, a dress that will get put in the closet and more than likely never see the light of day again, etc, etc.

The boat on the other hand, something you will use often, see often, make many memories on, take pictures from and look at more often than not, and something the two of you and future children can use as a family mini vacation every nice summer weekend...kinda sells itself:D

Actually, when I was engaged, we, together, put our wedding off a year so that we could buy a boat:D Now, several years later, we are on our third boat to keep up with the two girls and all of their friends that go with:) Wouldn't change it for the world.

Congrats on the upcomming wedding and enjoy life, you only get to do it once.

No matter what area you're in if that boat runs and has no rot/waterlog issues, $1600 is a steal for it. Personally, and I'm pretty serious about this, I would ditch that fiance of yours. Marriage is like adding a megaphone to her mouth in regards to bitching and moaning. If she's giving you grief NOW for spending a little money on yourself to do something you enjoy, just wait till you're married and she has control of your bank accounts. Trust me, I already went through it.

I don't understand why she has such a double standard. Most women pick the guy they will eventually say "yes" to, then go about fixing them up to their belief of a better value. The difference is the guys turn their deals around for a profit!:D

Re: Whats it worth?

or get her involved in boating--remove the his toys/her wedding dynamic.

No matter how much you spent or how much you saved, it is too expensive if you can't use it and enjoy it--either together, or by yourself with her blessing.

Thad, everything you say is true. Cheetah, don't you dare try that argument on her. Whether you are right is irrelevant when it comes to these things. Any married men disagree?

BTW I've been married almost 28 years. And I got the benefit of observing my parents' long marriage, with boating as a component of the lifestyle.

Re: Whats it worth?

I'd say that boat is worth about $500, tops. (Just had to give her something else to grip and complain about!)

Seriously, you should be okay with the value ... this time of year you should be able to get a decent return on investment. However, you WILL keep putting money into the money pit as long as you own her (the boat also :p:eek::D).

Good luck with the fiancee' AND the boat!

Wow, that's a super nice looking rig for the money you paid!!!! I'm also impressed with your ability to do the work you described. I'd say you could double or even triple your money anytime with that rig, with a great selling point that those items that commonly need replacing being done so recently.
Some women will never understand that men spend their money on stuff(toys) that can be sold when needed and recoup at least some of the money spent or more-----the stuff that women spend their money on can't (i.e. shoes, jewelry, fancy clothes, etc.):)
Nice buy, nice rig for sure! You did good!

Re: Whats it worth?

When I met my fiance (soon-to-be-wife), we were flipping through pictures. She passed a few boat files on my computer, went back and asked about the boats. She said, "I want a boat like that!".

Fast forward six months and she told me, "We need a boat. I am not going another summer without a really cool boat."

It had to fast, fun and cool. Those were the requirements.

It's just one of the ways in which we are compatible. Happiness is when all your hopes and dreams line up. When people accept you (appreciate you) for exactly who you are and what makes you tick... ahh... priceless!

Nice boat and deal that it is. I hope she has boating blood.

Agreed, or at the very least she would need to allow you to enjoy your hobbies on your own if she doesn't take interest in it herself. And if she does allow you to do so on your own, you have to be sure she ain't cheating on you while you do!! :p
