Don't know if 1970's era Hourston Glascraft were sold in the U.S., so question may be best answered by fellow Canucks, but all opinions welcome. Looked at a mid to late 1970's 14'.5 Hourston Glascraft Fiberglass runabout, age guess is based on windshield being flat (not curved), small angled side windows also flat. It has back to back seats, floor is fiberglass and can find no soft spots and transom also appears good. Has Teleflex type steering, (which appears to be original equipment, not added later, as opposed to cable and pulley type. Has a fold down half top, but it's pretty rotten from age.
Boat was a one owner, but the lady can't remember exactly when they bought it, it was always kept in a carport, and other than a bit dirty and faded paint, it appears to be in very good condition. Boat hasn't been used since the husband passed away in 1996, Does anyone have an idea what would be a fair price for just the boat. No Trailer, the sons keeping that, but It also has a 1978 Evinrude 35hp, electric start, that does still run, but also hasn't been used other than the son starting it now and then, I am guessing it might have pretty dry seals etc, maybe should replace water pump, and ??? even though it does have a good pee stream. What would motor be worth, or both boat and motor. Any opinions appreciated, many thanks

Re: Whats it Worth?

Prices in Canada are higher so add $25 to the boat and $10 for the motor.

Why so little value on what appears to be a good boat? I could understand if a new one was only $1000, or if this one had a spongy floor and/or rotten transom, broken windshield, fiberglass cracks, missing seats etc etc, but you can't even buy a used 10ft tinny for $100

The market in Canada would be to someone who wants to get a boat for their under 16 year old who would be allowed to drive it with under 40 hp. How much would you spend for a boat for your 12 year old? A much bigger boat and engine combo with a trailer could sell for no more than $3000. With no trailer not many people will put value on it. There are lots of people wanting a 10' tinny, even if it is no were near as nice.
If you are looking for a high value on it then give it $1000 LESS the cost of a nice trailer.
That's just my opinion. I won't be offended if you ignore it. :)

It is a 40 year old boat and surely you will find problems... how long will the wiring last, thru-hulls, and more? By the time you purchase a trailer and pay $400 you already have more in it than most would pay for a boat/motor that old. IMO ~~ I would look to sell the old motor or use it as an anchor. Too old and heavy for me to be comfy with unless on a small shallow lake.

Re: Whats it Worth?

It isn't a usable boat. It is a neglected hull and motor that have been sitting for AT LEAST 17 years....

Now if the son wants to go through the carbs and install a new impeller an gear lube... take it out and run it for several tanks of gas.... do a compression test and include a trailer then we can up the value quite a bit....

If you start with fair market value of the rig in ready to use condition of say (as high as I could possibly imagine even in Canada) $3000 and subtract for all that needs done and for the gamble of putting something that has set so long back into service and subtract for the "this is just trash in my way" attitude of the seller who is keeping the trailer and selling it without one. then you reach a value of pretty much nothing... I then assign a salvage value based on what I can do with the parts.....

If you want to pay top dollar then get something without any issues that you can use tomorrow.

just my .02......... personally I VERY often see old boat motor and trailer combos with the whole rig priced at or below what the motor alone would cost

Re: Whats it Worth?

I don't know about Canada but here in WA State a fair price for that age of boat and a good 35 HP motor minus the trailer would be between 800 to 900. Not sure why the son wants the trailer, but it would make it very difficult to sell minus the trailer.

Oh yeah and a 1978 Evinrude 35 is a great and very well built motor. I have the same age 55 HP and the above negative comment is ridiculous. They are great motors that weigh less than new ones.
