My motor start to make a fluttering sound. Shortly thereafter the gears seem to have disengaged. E.G. the engine was reving but we were suck in neutral. Now can not get the boat to move forward or reverse.

Any ideas?

If you mean you can't physically shift the engine that's one thing. If you can shift the engine and you feel it go into gear, but the prop doesn't move the boat, that's another thing. This may be anything from a broken shift cable, a disconnected shift cable, a broken prop shaft shaft, a broken prop shaft, or a spun prop hub. so why not do the simple things that you can easily see. Remove the engine cover and have someone move the throttle lever. If the linkage is moving you know the cable is not broken. With the engine off, put the shift into forward. Now turn the prop in each direction. It should ratchet in the clockwise direction and lock in the other. If it spins freely, you probably have some lower unit problems such as broken gears. Try wiggling the prop and moving it in and out. If it seems tight the prop shaft is probably ok. Now use a marker or scratch awl to place a mark on the hub of the prop (near the nut). Now place another mark on the outer part of the prop in line with the first mark. Now put the boat in the water and run it. Now check the alignment of the two marks. If they are still lined up, the prop hub has not slipped. If the marks are not lined up, the hub is slipping and the prop needs to be re-hubbed or replaced.
