How can I tell if a boat has to much motor for the size of the boat? I know there is a way to figure this from length and width, just wondering if anyone knows what the ratio is.. Thanks

Check the data plate.. gives max HP and max load. Stay within that horsepower rating. Any boat can have too much motor even at half the rated power...depends on the operator. I have seen people who should not been operating oars. Sadly, people buy boats with more power than they can handle. Boater safety courses often fail to mention how fast a boat can or can not plane off.

Bob

Hi, John.

First, try to find out what the USCG rating for the boat is.

You can estimate the rating of a console controlled boat that is over 16' and has a 20" or taller transom with this formula:

length x width, x2, -90. :)

Your local DNR should have a chart giving the HP rating based on transom width.
