What's so funny?

I bought this very inexpensive kayak from Amazon and decided to try it around the estuaries here. Some adults in boats snickered, as did some kids. What's so funny?

For 80.00 bucks (includes paddle and pump) I was able to get out several miles into the estuaries + explore some of the small islands around here. Something I can't easily do with a boat + motor. I think the draft of the kayak is something like 2-3 inches which is perfect for cutting through marsh grass. :D

Probably scary not seeing very often a major adult rowing & venturing out on a small inflatable watercraft :D

Re: What's so funny?

I've only Kayaked once, but I'm an adult (50+) and I 'venture on a small inflatable watercraft' (Sevylor HF360) all the time. I haven't got room for a trailer and have other claims on my money, so a larger boat is not an option. It gets me out on lakes, where I'd not otherwise have access, and quite comfortably at that. I've not had any adults snicker, as far as I know, but one kid did ask me if I was embarassed being in it. This is a kid who fishes with me and has no other access to fishing. I told him I was no more embarassed than he was, and asked if he'd rather not be seen in it himself. Needless to say, he's with me every chance he gets. As to any adults, there's always someone in a bigger, fancier (read: more expensive) boat looking down at others. Them openly snickering says more about them than it does about you and your boat.

My thoughts? Enjoy your boat AND whatever you do with the money you saved. If they are seeing you, you're on the same water that they are, and paid much less to do it than they did.

BTW: Nice looking boat!

I get the same in the rivers (Mississippi/St Croix) with my 12.5' SIB. I don't get the snickering up in lake Superior though. That would be because they're not in Lake Superior with their river boats. INFLATABLES RULE!!!!

Do you happen to be 6'10" 400 pounds I could see that being a bit humorous

Re: What's so funny?

Thanks guys! I have to say that this inflatable is a ton of fun! Even though it looks like a pool toy it does OK. In fact, it beats the hard shell boats I used to use a while back for comfort and ease of travel. I'll probably be getting another inflatable kayak soon to test out because the last thing I want to do is trailer more stuff to the water.

As per my size - if I were 6' 10" and 400 - it would be funny because the kayak can handle only 220 lbs max! I think the bright letters and shiny poly make people snicker. I actually get a kick out of people laughing at me because I like sick/deprecating humor :D

You didn't paint it pink like the sub in Operation Petticoat did you?

I don't get it. What is funny? I am thinking about getting one for my Dad and I and at $80 that is a good deal. I just don't know if a solid kayak is a better idea for me but sounds like you like the inflatable better.

That might be the ticket. Pink will make my vinyl kayak a babe magnet. Plus, a couple of beers. I could also park it next to a super yacht and tell em' I'm an eccentric millionaire? :D

The price point is certainly attractive and I am having a lot of fun with it. As per longevity I don't expect it to give me more than a summer, or two of fun. Tracking is not so good as the skegs at the bottom are rather small and the paddle that comes with the kayak makes you work for distance/motion. Directional control with the paddle is rather difficult and during one major crossing (with a lot of boats in the water) it came apart! It was funny, especially the spinning out of control in someone's wake. However, if you're paddling about in calm waters or a lake - it's blowout for fun and it comes with a small repair kit.

Yeah, no offense, but they may have been laughing at the dog, not exactly a "manly beast" !
Just ribbin' ya !
For those across seas, "ribbing" (ribbin') can mean "poking a little fun at" over here in the states.

Hi CapeAnn,

While there are always people looking down on us with inexpensive inflatables (even in this forum), I think many folks you though laughing at you are merely just smiling.

I don't see much kayakers where I fish, but I can seem myself pointing to them and telling my daughter, "Look, these folks are fishing from Kayak, isn't that cool?" with a big smile on my face.

And with that dog, come on, everybody will be smiling. :)

Dogs can do anything. Harummph! Also, I don't need no stinkin' paddle. I use Poop-drive. :D A good blast gets me a few feet/meters in any direction. ;)

Huh? Just because I am a French-wuss dog doesn't mean I am not manly. In fact - I am a 'ladies' man and on a daily basis I get at least ten women who want to take me home. I would like to see if any sailor here can beat my score. :D

I took the little guy out again. You can tell from the photo just how much he 'likes' it. Dogs have such expressions.
