Iam looking to repower. Iam looking at merc. etec. and yamaha. I have a 1989 80 hp merc.now aluminum deep v 90hp capacity rating. I know I will have to change controls and cables , gauges with different brand and I dont mind over 20 years old anyway. I would like to stay away from 4 stroke due to weight and maintaince. I heard optimax has noisy belt, has etec been proven over time ? Does etec have costly maintaince after warranty expires ? Can the average exp. boat owner service, diagnose, test like we do on our older 2 strokes ? I found a new 90 hp yamaha dealer said still in crate and it has carbs. What do you exp. men think ?

it will likely be cheaper to get a newer Merc, perhaps an inline 3 or 4 cylinder 90HP motor.

If you are willing to change over controls, I like the 60* V4 motors by Johnson from the late 90s and newer. They will have good power and light weight.

How about valve clearance checks and adjustment? No small task and since two-strokes don't have valves, that is a non-issue. Problems that come up after warranty expries is possible on any engine whether two or four stroke. As for diagnostics, the average owner cannot diagnose the modern two or four strokes very effectively as they require a PC to see what's going on. Pop a timing belt at 6000 rpm and you will find out in a hurry whether there is expensive maintenance.
