I have a 2002 Cobalt 226 with 2-batteries. A couple of years ago I replaced them with First Interstate blue top marine batteries. One of them went bad after the first year and the other one won't hold a charge this year. The Cobalt dealer doesn't recomend these batteries for some reason they have had the same problem with them. Can any one recomend a good marine battery??

I have a yellow top deep cycle 875 Walmart special that has lasted over 3 years. Still going strong--knock on wood. 2 875 auto ones on my truck are the same age and still doing the job. Bought all three at one time. Kinda worries me but if it ain't broke then don't fix it is my motto. I do carry around a jumper charger--just in case LOL

I've had the best luck with batteries from AutoZone. I had to buy one this year and the price of batteries has gone up about 30% from what the same battery cost 3 years ago.

Are you looking for a deep cylcel battery? I have a walmart marine battery that is going on three years now. But then again, I don't go out every weekend to fish and I mainly use it for instruments, and light trolling. Lately, though, it's been only holding about 80% charge max.

Both of the batteries on my boat are generic brand, One discount auto brand and one walmart brand. Personally I think the walmart brand (everstart I think?) are the best value, you can get a 27 size deep cycle for around $70 assuming you have a core. Their warranties are also very good imho.

Call me a cheapskate......but I buy all my batteries at the Interstate store (depot) and I only buy factory blemished batteries. I have had great luck with them and they are about 1/2 the price but have no warranty. 90%+ of the blemishes are cosmetic and who looks at a battery after it has been installed.

I have purchased truck, lawnmower and marine batteries that are all working fine.

Interesting read on battery's...forgot where i read it though..but it seems there are only 4-5 battery manufacturers in the world..Interstate being one..and the others are all "brand specific" meaning they label them according to who orders them, walmart-napa-auto zone ect...ive tried every one out there including ...hell cant rember that either..but, i gotta say wal mart yellow tops..cant beat the warranty..& price.

Most, not all, batteries arrive here on a cargo ship and have different suppliers names printed on them on this side of the pond. They are the same battery and quality has dropped significantly. If you can find a battery made in North America, buy it. Otherwise, go for the best warranty.

I haven't found any marine battery that outperforms the Wal Mart Everstart Marine Maxx dual purpose. That's the big one with the yellow top.

I am sure you can pay a lot more and not get any better service.

Another recommendation for the Walmarts yellows, I use them in everything, and have a deep cycle in my boat for my #2 battery.

Or if you want a batterie that will never leak again from the top try Optima blue top batteries, they say that is the best, And they say if the batterie gose dead from sitting and will not take a charge then just hold and drop the batterie from your waist hight and just let it slam down even and it resets the plates and it will take a charge 3-5 years from now:eek:;):p:D:) They are pricey like $180.00 ea. and also a lot of guys sware by the batteries at costco, And wal-mart is good to:)

i agree 100% jb

i had to replace both batterys on our boat and looked at the optimas and di-hards. for the difference in price i could by the group 29 everstart with a 14 month free replacment and 875 cc amps.if the warrenty wasnt any good, we could still by 2 each year and have fresh batterys and save money. anything over a year and i'm into bonus savings. at this rate i would have to get 3 years minimum form the optimas to break even and they were less amp hr. batterys to boot.
i was concerned that the deep cycle might not work for a starting battery but wanted two house batterys anyway so i started with the two D-Cycles with the idea of adding a starting battery if needed and using the DC's in parallel.

well i did switch to two of them in parallel for house batterys but only after i bought an other for a starting battery as with 875 cc amps i never could tell the difference between these and a starting battery. bear in mind i' cranking a BB chev and if any motor is going to have probs it that one.

now i can run my house batterys down and switch to my starting battery and run it down to 11 volts, as low as i have tried up to now, and have had plenty of amps left to start my motor. this gives us 3 days on the hook with out need for starting to recharge if we want to

we tend to use our boat for 1 to 4 weeks steady then park for 2 or 3 months and not touch it

if you want the cheapest amp hours you can get and want to use a deep cycle for starting and house batterys i would recomend this set up to you

Yes I here you it is a lot of money knowing you have a lot of stuff to power up, I just did a big stereo system in my boat and had to add a second batterie, and told the wife you are the one that wanted the big stereo, Now you need a good batterie to keep it going:D And since the guy that posted this thread has a cobalt it is more then likely he is one of the type of guys that money is not the biggest part just as long as it will work for him the longest so he hopfully will not need to deal with batteries any time soon again, At least that is what more then most of my customers that owen a cobalt tell me all the time. So that is just what I am use to is all;):)

It's always best to stick to personal experience, not hearsay, when giving advice. ;)

*edit* after reading that nonsense, I bet the Optima "rep" was hoping he would drop it and break the case so they could deny his warranty, what a silly idea LOL

I know it sounds silly But some times you need to read other ideas out their and come up with what ever you think will work or not. that is what these fourms are for A lot is hearsay, And some is experience. It would be hard for me to get experience by droping a batterie to the ground, That is why some times you read things from other people from what they have done in the past and come up with your own thoughts if some things will work or not. I was just as supprised as you when I read it and that is coming from a owener of a hi performance boat shop. So while on these fourms we need to go on our own to know if we are getting experience, or hearsay. I normaly give out to much of my experience, And if I am giving out info of what I have heard or read then I try to say it that way, That is just me.:)

My point is you should post YOUR opinion about YOUR experience, instead of posting what your uncle's best friend's one eyed cambell soup eating grandmother did ;)

Sometimes you need to use common sense, I don't care if Jesus said to drop a $180 battery on the concrete to know that's just a little lame brained.
I already have an email into Optima asking them what their stance is on this practice, and will post up their reply.
