Whats the best way to remove old letters?

I just purchased a new set of lettering for my Chaparral, both sides. What is the best way to remove the old letters from the boat without doing any damage to the boat and little damage to the letters? They are raised chrome plastic stuck on with two sided tape. Will a heat gun and scraper be ok on the fiberglass hull?

You can use a heat gun and scraper, just be careful not to get things to hot and try not to scratch up your hull with any scraper you use. Others may have better suggestions. Good luck!

i would sure try to find a PLASTIC scraper, wouldn't wanna make my boat mad by using metal .. Curious as to why it matters if old letters damaged if you are replacing em anyway. I suppose they would look pretty cool on a cooler or the man cave wall or sumtn ...

Slice through the tape with dental floss. Then work on the tape on the hull with fingernails and gentle chemicals. When it's all off you might have to polish up the hull to hide the shadows of the old lettering.

The hair dryer works great and I have never had to use a scraper just fingernails to get it started then real slow and easy. Don't get it too hot or it will stretch and tear.

I never used a scraper either, just heat gun and fingers. I used 3m adhesive remover to take the glue off the hull once the sticker was removed. Hi Pauly!

Thanks guys. I wanted to try to save the letters if possible as I can sell them individually to guys who have lost theirs.

Heat them up and use monofilament fishing line as a saw.

I took off some rear lettering which was raised plastic and 2sided tape. I just slowly peeled the letters off and used a scraper for most of the tape then used goo b gone for the remaining film. I then buffed with buff magic and their pro polish, you can't even tell there were letters there even on a 20 year old boat.

i used my torch then a razor blade and my fingernails just a little heat to soften them and they peeled of in one peice before the heat they would just break and come off in tiny peices
