What is different about these 2 motors? They look the same, and weigh the same... they're always grouped together in all Honda ads I've come across.
I'm trying to decide on one for my 14ft fishing boat. The 20 is about $550 more. Anyone know if there's a significant speed difference between the two?

i would put the max hp that the boat is rated for. the difference is, 5 hp, and $550. i don't know if 5 hp is worth $550.

I have an older 15hp Honda and it was the same base engine as the 9.9hp. This last year they moved the 15 & 20 into the same basic block, etc. I would only assume the carb or tuning would be the only difference.
This year, the 8hp & 9.9 are not in the same base engine.

I just picked up a Honda broucher today, looks about the same except the 20hp is about 5 lbs lighter than the 15 hp.

The blocks are the same and the weight is the same in the same shaft length.
The only real difference is in the carburator. The 20 allows a little more air and fuel than the 15 into the same block. I thank they also did something on the exhaust. Really only makes a difference at the top end of the rpm range where you need more air and fuel.

If the boat is rated for 20 HP I would go with the 20. I have a 14 Foot aluminum Klamath and a 15HP Johnson 2 stroke. Boat with me and the wife planes good and runs about 18 MPH. Add the kids or if I and my buddys go with fishing gear the boat will not plane and only goes about 9 MPH.

If it does not exceed the Max HP go with the 20.

Note if you want electric start and the 12 amp charger then you have to get the power tilt, don't ask me why. That power tilt also add pounds to the weight so check their web site for details.
