What's the difference between these 2 types of PT&T units?

I noticed the first one is only called a power tilt unit. Does that mean it can only be used to raise the motor all the way up or down and not be used to trim it out?

That is correct, the first one is only for tilting. It will not support the motor under power in partial tilt (trim) positions. The second one is trim and tilt. Make sure it fits whatever you want to put it on before buying. They are not universal.

Bummer. I knew the deal I was getting on the first type of unit from a salvage place was too good to be true. Could the first type be used to trim the motor up enough to get off a sandbar or something like that? I don't necessarily need the ability to trim my motor at speed.

It will hold it up at idle, but will squish down at anything much above that.
