I Have a 83 johnson j140tlcte. broke the rings in #4 cylinder and need a head. FSM/parts catalog list a different part number for the 140 versus the 90 and 115. can i use the head from a 115. found one of those on ebay. a new one for the 140 is in the 425$ range which is REDICULOUS!!! and does the year range matter on the head exchange?

The key in matching up heads is to match up the casting numbers. You either want one with the same number as your damaged head, or one that is one number up or down from the opposite side's head.

These early 140 crossflow heads were typically higher compression than the 85/90 and 115 models. All the hot rodders were after these heads for their low hp engines. You can run a 90/115 head on the engine. Those engines are the same displacement and use the same head gaskets. You will find the compression will probably be at least 10 lbs lower that the other stock 140 head.

what if i had a machine shop shave a few thousandths off the surface of the 115 head. Antbody think thats a good idew or just bolt it on and go withit. Its not a race engine i just want something thats reliable.

Don't run two different horsepower heads. That would be asking for a major meltdown. If your gonna replace that head with a 115 head, you need to replace both heads as a set. As for milling a few thousandths of a head, not recommended unless your shop is experienced in outboard head modifications. 1978 - 1984 140hp heads are all the same. There are a few places you can call for a set of used heads. You can look in the forum for Salvage Yards, by Wilde1 for a good list of parts places to call.

Wont add a bit of compression and risks the chance of piston bottoming out in head at rpm.

gonna try and find a 140 head with matching part numbers with what i got. If not i will have to swap both heads i guess to a matching pair unless somebody has a better idea.
