I just picked up a 1993, 32 foot party cruiser. I was looking between her legs yesterday and saw a nub of a tri toon back by the motor. It has an outboard. Anybody know what that third toon is for? It's about 5 foot long. Is it supposed to be about halfway full of water? It is open at the end if you look over the back of the boat, and water is slashing around inside it, almost at water level. Could that possibly be why my gas mileage is so horrendous?

Thats called a transom, and it will fill with water and run out later when under way and as far as gas mileage. well that will verier from 5 MPG to 1 MPG or less.

As stated it is the transom and gives you a place to mount the motor as well smoothing out the water coming to the motor. It should fill with water until you get enough lift while underway to be above the water line. As far as gas mileage, you have a 32 foot boat, its going to drink gas to move it. Rule of thumb is at WOT you will burn 10% of hp per hour, so 100 hp will be 10 gallons of gas an hour at full throttle.

Thinking about it as a new term, a nub toon sounds good sort of like a de floperizer

Re: Whats the nub-toon?

The pontoon design lends itself well to displacement speeds.6 to 8 mph.It may actually do better than a planing hull at those same speeds. When you push beyond the displacement speeds your fuel use will go way up.Way beyond your increase in speed.
Your 32 footer is an extreme to compare to a runabout but A 100 hp on say a 25 ft runabout could probably squeeze out 25 or 30 mph
lightly loaded.Your 32 ft pontoon probably would make 17 or 18 mph. Both boats will use about 10 gph at wot with a 100 hp motor.
If we double the hp the runabout probably will run around the high 40s or 50.your pontoon probably about 25 or so.
If you make sure your motor is in excellent tune it will do respectably at those displacement speeds.
If your in a hurry you will use a lot of fuel.

It is an absolute shame that one of the pontoon companies wont think outside the "Tube" and figure out a way to make aluminum catamaran style, shaped hulls. A 28' catamaran weighing around 5,500 to 6,000 pounds using twin 20 hp engines will run about 18 to 20 mph on about 2 gallons an hour of gas. It would seem that the first company to build them will own the industry for a long time. What could be bad about going just as fast on 1/3 the power.

They do , its called a tri toon with lifting strakes, but its still like trying to shove a brick through the water.

I'm sorry Admiral Hawker but, you need to go back and look at them again. The only thing they have in common is they float.

While 2 20 hp making 18 to 20 mph with a 5500lb catamaran is impressive a 20hp motor will use about 2 gallons per hour at wot.
but still impressive at 4 gph.I do think some of your numbers may be muddled I don't think it impossible for 40 hp to push a displacement hull at 18 to 20.I do think it would be quite efficient at 6 to 8 mph.

I am running a 15 hp on a 20 foot toon, with all of the gear off of it I get 12 mph on gps at around 2 gph and around 5 mpg with all of my gear it drops off to 9 mph

Re: Whats the nub-toon?

OK here's one example it will do 16 knots or 18.4 mph top speed. It's 28 foot, weighs about 5,500. Skoota 28 A pontoon is just not as efficient as a catamaran hull there are plenty of places to find out about them. Now, are they as cheap? I doubt it. Will you save gas and horse power? yes you will. And as I said the first pontoon company that figures out how to stamp them out of aluminum will own the market untill the others catch up. So, don't believe me but, do go read up on it before you dismiss what I said.

Demi-toon?
Semi-toon?
Quarter-toon?
Toonette?
Thing-you-hang-the-motor-on-toon?

Nope. None of them are quite as good as nub-toon.

Lmao,you guys crack me up.

Even so, efficiency means speed at some point. So, I'm all ears...err eyes.
