The white plastic thing that the speed adjust cable is hooked to ... I have one on the other side that is hooked to the forward/ reverse shifter cable but it is broken in two... thanks.

Look around here, you may find 1 that fits your motor.

BTW: If you post make, year & model of your motor, it would help when you ask about parts for it

Thanks! I thought it was a 35 hp 1957 johnson javelon because that is what the hood (cowel???) that sits over the motor is, but the serial number gives me a 30 hp 1956 johnson ____ something. I don't know if it is a javelon. Looks like a mix and match outboard... it has a long shaft that goes to the propeller, and I can not figure out how to tilt the motor forward, which is a b!+C# when launching it.... there is a lever in the front under the johnson madalion, but yeah... thanks for your help.
