I picked up this lower unit for my 75 hp yamaha and it has this pin on top the driveshaft. The rest seems the same as mine.

Anyone know what its for and or how to remove it?

Thanks for any help

I found out it's called a preload pin but the repair manual has no information on it.

It's from a 91 85 hp that I'm trying to put on a 94 75 hp.

Everything else is the same , it should just bolt up but I can not find out any info on the pin.

Maybe the pin is spring loaded to take any up and down play out of the drive shaft?....Try to push down on it?..

Exactly as Robert Graham says, this is a spring loaded pin to pre load the drive shaft against chatter at idle. Should be able to push in against the internal spring.

Thank you for your replys.

Yes it is spring loaded. I can push it down but it bottoms out with a 1/2 inch still sticking up. I don't see any way of getting it out short of cutting it.

I looked up the crank of both models and they are the same part # so I wonder if it will be ok to just bolt it up with the pin? I am assuming the driveshaft slides inside a mating end on the crank?

I looked up in the motor with a light but can't tell, I do know that you?re not to get grease on top of the shaft so I?m a little worried that that extra bit of pin might cause problems.

Then I would get the right parts for you motor instead of trying to use ones that are for a different motor
