What's this penny doing in my '54 Seahorse 10hp?

Hi,

This is my first post to the forum...I have learned lots from reading. My question is about my QD-15. I am doing a tune-up, changing coils, points, etc...The first thing I noticed when I removed the shroud was a penny used for a plug on the engine just below and to the left (port) of the spark plug holes. I'll try to include some pics. My question is: Should I replace the penny with a proper plug? and if so, where would I find a plug? I have a copy of the parts manual (thanks to wbeaton!!!) , but I can't seem to figure out just what should be there.

Thanks!

Chris

The factory put a freeze plug in there when the motor was built, with the model# and serial# stamped on it. Somewhere along the years someone replaced it with the penny, I have seen this before.

After seeing the pics, I thought the same thing, and greasy too over the carpet. :)

That was probably cheaper than the postage to buy the right part!

Thanks for the replies!

....She made me move it back into the workshop yesterday

Apparently she just doesn't appreciate the beauty of an old motor!

I'm not gonna touch the penny by the way. I'm getting 85s on both cylinders for compression.

I can't wait to get it out on the lake.

I'm just waiting on parts in the mail to proceed with the overhaul!

Thanks again,

Chris

Wonder if the boys in Peterborough ran out of plugs that day on the assembly line :D

That's funny!
