Got my AQ131A out of the boat and finally got the bellhousing off only to find some sort of strange coating as shown in the picture.

I don't have a clue as to what it might be or how to clean it off. Anybody have a guess? Thanks.

You have a grease fitting on the top of the bell housing.
Maybe it's dirty grease slung off the drive shaft?
Not being able to mush it around and seeing only the flywheel????
Who knows??

Re: What's this stuff on my flywheel?

Well, this probably won't be the only dumb question I'll be asking on this forum as I sort this engine out. I think I asked the question because I've never had a bellhousing off before and I thought maybe that mess indicated something that I needed to know about. Apparently not.

So, of course I'll be cleaning it off and that brings up a question. Besides scraping and wire brushing, is there any kind(s) of solution that can help me get this done?

A can of brake cleaner if it's oil or grease

I looks like there is a water line from about 11:00 to 6:00. I'm guessing mud. Scrap it off with a plastic scraper. Good news is, It might run more smoothly once the flywheel is balanced again.

Well it's a mystery. Too hard to be mud and doesn't quite act like rust. It's going to have to be scraped and wire brushed off, but I'm not sure how to get into the small spots around the springs.

Was hoping that there is some kind of magic metal solution that would help. Oh well. I'll post up a pic after I get done.

There is no doubt this engine sat partially submerged for awhile. Yes - muddy water can get into the bilge and into that area. I assume this is a new-to-you boat? We can't tell you how to get it off unless you determine what it is. You won't hurt the flywheel with a putty knife. You won't hurt the springs with a wire brush.

A pressure washer won't hurt a bit.
Carb cleaner,maybe a sand blaster?
These things are pretty tough and can take some abuse.
The parts called an absorber.VERY expensive.
So expensive it's a dealer only item and no price listed.

jerry's right.

i would pull the plate off the flywheel, there may be another layer of "stuff" behind it.

Ayuh,..... I'd probably take it a step further, 'n pull the flywheel too,...

Alot easier cleanin' things on the bench anyways,...

It it got on there in the water, wetting it and letting it soak may soften things up.

I've had this boat for three years, but not used it much. The prior owner did have the boat sitting for awhile. Last licensed in 1997. Damn I hate the thought that it was sitting in that much water.

Anyhow, thanks for the opinions and I agree. Pulling the flywheel is what I need to do. However the engine is on a stand now in my garage without a convenient way to lift it again so I think my plan will be to "stabilize" it for the moment by scraping, wire brushing what I can reach and then spray it down with WD-40.

Then, when it's time to pull the engine off the stand, I'll pull the flywheel and give it a full cleanup. Damn.
