I have been reading some posts about boat restorations and wonder is the top and bottom halfs of mid 70's glastrons stapled toghther under the rubber bumper that goes around boat?>
I was looking at a boat for sale that has an obvious repair done on one side of boat and I can see new bigger piece of wood with big screws in inside of gunwell. I assume that are holding bumper rail to boat, I also see a layer of fiberglass added like it split or bumper and rail pulled off. Looks to be solid repair. Just wondering your thoughts>>?

Re: whats under rubber side bumpers

On most boats the deck to hull joint is covered by the rub rail. Most of the boats I have seen, the joint is screwed together and sealed with something similar to silicone or "life caulk". In most cases the deck to hull joint is above the waterline and if it was repaired some time ago and not cracking apart and has no signs of delamination......as long as you are aware that a repair was done and feel that it is solid......I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Re: whats under rubber side bumpers

I've had a couple of old Glastrons.(67 and 76). On both of them, the rubrail is screwed through the hull to a thin piece of plywood and some type of sealer used.

The wood they used was really thin and I had problems with the screws wallowing out. You may be looking at the way someone fixed the problem.

A good test of the rubrail is to walk around the boat and press just below it. There shouldn't be any seperation between the bottom and top as you go. If its sturdy all the way around, the floor doesnt have soft spots and the transom is solid, you should be ok.
