And check the length on these "China Pipes", got the kit like Jason 3 years ago from a well know after market distributor. turns out the water inlet pipe from the out-drive to the transom was over 1 1/2 short. First time I tilted the out drive it popped off, knew I had tightned it. Took it off compared with the old one, and it was short.

Of the 7 I bought for my 888 last year (Merc Quicksilver Parts!) All were "Made in China" and do not appear to be as well made as the originals were. I was very dissappointed, esp. since the set was ~$150.... I'll make my own next time out of quality bulk hose from my local boating store.

I'll be willing to bet that a lot of parts were made overseas for years.

Mercury does not make many parts, but distributes them for either oem manufacture or replacement. Their choice in part manufacturers is what determines the quality of the parts that you receive.

This is what happens with minimum wage hikes and exhorbitant taxe rates in this country. So many companies have to go overseas just to compete.

P.S. Here is a tip to save you some money. A lot parts, bearings and seals come to mind, are not specifically made for a particular motor and are outsourced from another manufacturer. I take the number from the part and determine the maker. I contact the maker and find out where I can purchase the part. The exact same part can be purchased for up to half the price of one purchased through marine sources. The challenge is figuring out who manufactured the part.

Brett is spot on! In the case of bearings, the number that's stamped on the bearing (6203-16-2RS for example) is really the dimensions (metric) of the bearing. In some cases a manufacturers name and number may appear on it but most bearing supply houses can cross reference them and give you a generic equivalent. Manufacturers of equipment try to use standard bearings wherever possible. In some cases they do need to design a special bearing so those would likely need to be obtained from the manufacturer (unless an aftermarket demand makes it worth while for a second party to manufacture them). The example above happened to be for an idler wheel bearing for a snowmobile. Those numbers represent a bearing with an OD of 62 MM (about 1-5/8 inch), for a 16 mm shaft (5/8-inch) and rubber seals on both sides. Dealers at the time charged over $10 for them but they were available for about 3 bucks at bearing houses.

Yeah, most Merc dealers do not have the space or the capital to carry a whole lot of parts. A lot of these parts are overpriced anyway. Unless it is something that I can't get anywhere but a marine dealer, I'll purchase the same part elsewhere. You ALWAYS pay for shipping, whether you know it or not.

Sarcasm... It's hard to get across here...

I am a Merc dealer. I have thousands of items in stock. What I don't have,I order promptly. I don't have a huge store, but I do know how to take good care of my customers. Because of that, I ship thousands of dollars worth of parts, all over the world. I never would have thought it was possible, for a lowly little dealer(in Indiana, land of no water)to accomplish this. Goes to show, hard work is better than flashy signs!

Many dealers do overcharge... More than MSRP.
I prefer a different approach. I give 10% discount and free standard shipping to anywhere in the 48 states. Most dealers don't give discounts due to their low volume. I just raised my volume to accomodate the discount...

To those who use OEM parts... I say thanks for your business !

on my 9 year old boat if you take what has needed to be replaced and divide by 9 its less than 200 dollars a year to keep OEM parts on it and keep my local dealer in business

i guess i could save 20 or 30 dollars a year

would i pay 600 dollars for a trim pump that i could get for 300 if the dealer would not work with me NO

but i am not going to worry about the 5 and 30 dollar stuff thats sitting a mile from my house

tommays
