Whats with the red plug!?

Ok, first off, I'll admit total ignorance with Evinrude/Johnson products. I have a Maxum with a dead Force 50. I bought an 85 Evinrude (which I know nothing about yet) 50hp to hopefully replace it. My original thought was "a control is a control, this US Marine thing oughta run it..." Now after reading some, I see these controls for this thing that sell for absurd amounts of money and are all "red plug" set ups... So what can I do aside from dropping hundreds into a control unit!?

You didn't get the controls with the engine? First lesson learned, always get the controls when you buy a used engine.
Your best bet is to bite the bullet and get the correct control for your engine. It will fit and function properly.
Go to the top of the page and look in the "Top Secret File" sticky, there is a list of salvage yards there, give some of them a call and see what you can get one for.

I got the motor for less than what most controls are selling for, so that's why I didn't think to much about it.

Whatever happens, you'll have to get the proper controls and wiring harness for the mtr. Unless you're really good at "jury rigging" something.

If you got the motor for less than the cost of controls, the save yourself the headaches and splurge on the right controls! Heck, sell the Force controls for seed money if you need to!

Absurd to me is $200-$400 for a set of used, 25 year old controls. It seems crazy to me that the older, dual handle Evinrude controls are selling for $30 with a wiring harness and cables all day but these ones are so much more.

I'm planning on selling off all the old Force stuff for sure. I've got 2 lower units to get rid of along with the complete motor. The CDI and coils alone.seem to bring over $100.

I'd be contacting the person I bought the engine from with the statement that he forgot to give you the controls for it and the engine is worthless to you without them.
